Can writing a bestseller be dangerous? Christian author Beth Rider’s 2nd vampire novel hit number 1. She’s flying high, until confronted by an evil she’d only experienced in nightmares. Jack Dawn, a supernatural monster belonging to an ancient race of bloodthirsty immortals, “marks†the young writer because of her book’s redemptive effect on his people, leaving her racing for life.
I’m reading Rabbit: Chasing Beth Rider at the request of Linda Boulanger, the fine lady behind TreasureLine Books, who is responsible for bringing this book to market and who also got me a complimentary ebook for review. Rabbit is the first in Ellen C. Maze’s “Rabbit” series of “curiously spiritual vampire tales.”
Okay, that caught my attention. Add to that the fact that Ellen is a Messianic Jew— from Alabama no less, where parents can be convicted if their kid fails a drug test. (And psychologists say we parents take our kids’ behavior too personally.) I’m getting way off topic here; sorry.
Add to that the fact that Ellen is a Messianic Jew, and I myself identify strongly with Messianic Judaism. I’m definitely gonna crack this book open.
I’ve just started the story. My first impressions: Eh… The plot’s got some good points. Potentially interesting setting, depending on how Ellen pulls it off. Sometimes, the characters feel a bit weak, Javier in particular, whose story sometimes feels preachy. The villain is wonderful (in a villainous way), but sometimes I wonder where Beth is coming from. And remember how picky and perfectionist I am. If the concept sounds potentially interesting to you, this book’s probably worth checking out, and it’s on sale with the coupon code RAE50 for Read-an-ebook Week, this week, as are many other TreasureLine titles.
(In particular, Sharon E. Cathcart’s novel In the Eye of the Beholder, which I rated 5 stars (out of 5), is free this week.)
Here’s today’s teaser, from p. 234 (randomly chosen via random.org) of the Smashwords PDF edition of Rabbit: Chasing Beth Rider:
“Yosef got religion, eh?†he asked still watching the close group.
“Two weeks ago. He tried to hide me, but they found me and brought me here to punish him, I guess.â€

YOU SAID “Add to that the fact that Ellen is a Messianic Jew— from Alabama no less, where parents can be convicted if their kid fails a drug test.”
Ruh-roh…hehe
Seriously, I hope you get something out of the read!

Thanks for the shout-out, Tim! I appreciate your support. 🙂
Hey, thanks for the comments, Ellen & Sharon.
Ellen: By that comment about Alabama, I meant to imply that you were brave, on multiple levels, and may stand alone. Alabama is not known for its Jewish values, nor does it sound like somewhere I would fit in.
