I suck at a lot of things. For example, keeping a schedule. Or finishing what I’ve started.
For example, I started this post last June, with the deeply insightful sentence, “foo bar baz qux quux.” It’s taken me that long to get from there to this point.
So… I originally had no idea what to post today. But I wanted to post something, because (as you may have figured out) that’s my new shtick (again).
And then I thought I could post spry and witty comments on my favorite, most memorable X-Files episodes (which could be really spooky and fun). But then I found out there are 40 of them (seriously), some more memorable than others, and I couldn’t re-watch all those episodes (much less think up spry and witty comments regarding all of them) before 10AM this morning. So I need to trim down that list a bit; that’s a longer-term project.
And then I went back into the list of old drafts, ideas, and whatnot, and I found a couple of hilarious unfinished posts about stupid software (which at the time I did not intend to be funny at all, but deadly serious). I could combine them into a new post mocking the software industry (or at least parts of it). However, that would be way more appropriate for next Friday, as I’ve planned next week around a long-overdue (uplifting) epilogue to my “Depression and the Software Developer” series.
Sigh.
So… As I write this, it’s 11:18 AM—over an hour late for Friday’s 10AM post. And normally what I would do is just skip it. But I got into a bad habit skipping posts over the past year. So bad that I ended up skipping most of them. Even so, I might have skipped this one were it not for That Neil Guy‘s touching comment yesterday: “I’m glad that you are posting regularly again. I always enjoy reading your posts.”
Wow. Thanks so much, Neil. As you know (being a writer yourself), getting a comment like that is better than getting a diamond ring.
(And now that I’m in the vicinity, I should return the favor. I’m subscribed to all of his blogs. And I always enjoy reading his posts, too.)
This is just one more wonderful thing that’s happened over the past couple weeks with my writing career. (Seriously, there have been several.) Maybe I’m back on track.
So… I couldn’t just skip this Friday post, even though it’s late. But I can link to another great post.
One of the blogs I’m subscribed to, for fun, is that of John Heald, who is the Senior Cruise Director for Carnival Cruise Lines. I originally subscribed to his blog because of my admiration for The Love Boat. But I found his sense of humor very… uh… British. Besides which, he makes me laugh.
So… John recently posted a story about some guests who had lost their luggage, plus a bunch of entertaining letters (especially the one from Joleen Koprucki), and why he will not be directing the Bare Necessities charter cruise (seriously).
