Leftover Ginger Chicken Stir-Fry, still yummy
Yesterday—which is when I’m actually writing this—I told the Missus, “You know, every time I make a new dish, I should take a picture of it as a matter of course.
She agreed without hesitating.
Because I had made dinner Sunday afternoon, and we had eaten our fill, and only then did I think that the recipe would make for an interesting Monday blog post.
So that’s why you, unfortunately, get only the leftovers. But they’re still yummy, and in fact, the Missus made a little snack out of them yesterday evening, and I’m sure she’ll finish them off for lunch today.
I based this recipe on Paula Deen’s Chicken Stir-Fry (and other recipes), but I modified it, stay-at-home–dad–style, to be even quicker and easier—which is quite a feat considering how simple hers is—and to use ingredients we commonly have on-hand at our house. So, only a little menu planning, only a little shopping, practically no prep (except to cut up the chicken), and only 10 or 20 minutes in front of the stove. This is an issue I’ve been wrestling with in OpenOffice.org 3, and I just now figured out a work-around.
I use OpenOffice Writer to typeset most of my books, because it works well enough, and it’s cross-platform (kinda). I also usually use drop caps of some sort, because studies show that they improve readership. (Believe it or not.) And I’ve been using fixed line-spacing and register-true, because they make the layout look more professional. But there’s an issue with drop caps displaying bigger than I want them to, and I didn’t think I could do anything about it, until I accidentally noticed a paragraph in which the drop cap looked correct.
The paragraph’s style had been manually modified, and it was not using the “Text body chapter-first” style that I had specified. So I dug into the style parameters and finally figured out why it was displaying correctly in that case, and I developed a work-around to deal with the problem in the future.
This is a work-around, not a bug report, because I can’t reliably reproduce the bad behavior—I did try—and I don’t have time right now to delve into it further and figure out how to reproduce it. If you feel like working it out and reproducing the bug, please do submit a bug report to OpenOffice.org.
For now, here’s what I’ve found out. In OpenOffice Writer, when I use Drop Caps with Register-true turned on, in some situations, the first line of the paragraph gets pushed down, and the drop cap expands to fill the empty space. Here’s a screenshot of what I mean, from my dad’s upcoming book Jots & Tittles: Continue reading “OpenOffice Drop Caps Too Big? Try This Work-around”

When does a child’s artwork become “art”?
I was dwelling on this question as I put together some of my daughter’s artwork to post here. My daughter Abbie, now 10, has been drawing, sculpting, creating for as long as she’s been old enough to hold a pencil. People see her draw, and they say, “Oh, how talented!” But she and I both know that it’s not merely talent; it’s also because she works hard.
Abbie has a deep-seated passion for art. That’s why she spends untold hours drawing and re-drawing the same sketch, until it’s finally how she wants it—or at least good enough to have shown progress. That’s why she get excited whenever she learns of a new technique, or a new form, something she hasn’t tried before, and she has to go off and create a dozen picture using that technique.
I remember when she and I together rediscovered old adventure games, displayed in that old, blocky, 320×240-pixel screen resolution. She went through a phase where she would create pictures by coloring small, solid blocks—pixels—on a paper. And she got pretty darn good at it, too.
At this rate, if it takes 10 years of practice to become an expert in something, then Abbie will be an expert artist by the time she enters high school. That’s passion.
I usually only share her artwork with people I actually know (on Facebook). But today, I thought I’d put together a short video featuring her artwork. Everything you see here Abbie herself created from the ground up—with one exception, the cat, which Abbie drew and Margaret colored. And the more creative concepts were all hers, such as the picture of Lessette, her first betta fish, made out of toothpicks; or the sculpture of a chapel, made out of erasers. Other ideas were clearly borrowed, such as the cast of characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender. But all the pictures were drawn freehand; that is, none were traced. This is a funny blog post. Really. Just hang on. I’m sure it will get funnier as I get snarkier. (By the way, how come my spellchecker doesn’t know the word snarkier?)
I actually wasn’t going to post anything for Wishcasting Wednesday today (which by now is actually yesterday, since it’s now half past midnight). I was only going to read others’ postings, because I simply had too many tasks booked for today—that is, yesterday—and I didn’t think I would be able to do it justice. Instead, I was just going to post a quick note about a funny job ad I found on craigslist.
But then, I saw an article, brought to my attention by Alison Driscoll (@alisond), about how some employers are checking out prospective employees on Facebook and other social networking sites. Some of them are disqualifying job applicants based on what they find, and I’ll frankly never understand how ridiculous some employers are.
I then decided that the funny craigslist ad can wait until tomorrow (which is, by now, today), by which time I’m sure I’ll find even more, funny craigslist ads (though I haven’t yet). Continue reading “:-p :^) to Prospective Employers”

The quick-and-dirty concept cover for Dad's new book—with a possible marketing problem that no one has noticed yet. (Click to enlarge.)
Recently, a friend commented on her little one’s first day of school. Must have been preschool. The little tyke was so excited, she was up and ready by 8:15 in the morning.
For me, though, this week, the Missus is on staycation (except 2 mornings she needs to go in and catch up on work—she’s salaried), and I was looking forward to her taking the kids out of the house to do fun things with them. The house being quiet and empty, I was hoping maybe I could post a fun video today. But so far, it hasn’t worked out that way, because the Missus has phone calls to make and stuff to clean and stuff to pack for moving and stuff to load up into my in-box, which I promised to do but I haven’t gotten a round two yet. Therefore, I really haven’t gotten much done today, and now my head is beginning to hurt, a slow, dull ache.
Oh! I can so not wait for the kids to go back to school!
(I’m going to get to the book cover. Trust me. Just give me a moment, please…) Continue reading “Gilmores, Blocks, and Judging a Book by Its Cover”

Earlier this week, I tweeted, “Yippee! NetFlix is shipping me the new Love Boat DVD’s today! (Yeah, I like The Love Boat. So sue me! <g>)”
To that Robin (aka @Tuphlos) retorted, “I’m suing you for putting that theme song into my head.”
No need for a lawsuit, Robin! (By the way, did I mention how pretty the name “Robin” is?) No need for a lawsuit, because there’s a simple solution: just start humming the “Small World” song! No more Love Boat sailing through your head! Problem solved!
In any case, Netflix did mail me the latest batch of Love Boat DVD’s (Season 2, Vol. 2), released just last week. And I’ve been having fun watching them. So I jotted down a few random thoughts that came to mind in between stupid laughs and romantic moments. Continue reading “11 Thoughts on the Love Boat”

Door to Nowhere, by "purplemattfish" on Flickr; © 2009 CC BY-NC-ND 2.0
This morning, after I dropped the Missus off at work, I headed down Washington Street toward Mishawum Road, where I needed to make a left turn in order to get to the highway.
Now, this particular intersection has two left-turn lanes. That is, if you want to make a left turn, you can either get into the left-most lane or into the one next to it. Or in other words… You can see what I mean in the picture below, from Google Maps.
As i approached the intersection, I noticed several cars lined up in the left-most turn lane. Meanwhile, the other turn lane was completely empty. And I thought, Let’s see… I could pull up behind all those cars in the left-most lane, or I could go to the front of the line by using the other lane. Hmm. Which should I do?
And I almost pulled up behind the line of cars at my left. Continue reading “Opening the Door to Your Own Destiny”

I hope you get as big a kick out of this as I did. Here are a couple of recent craigslist ads I did not reply to. I mean, yeah, there’s getting work just to make money. But then, there’s getting work just so you can make fun of your new client.
So, maybe I might have tried to get on one of these projects, just so that I could get some Dibert-esque, “You gotta be kidding!?” blog posts out of them. But I didn’t want to have to deal with the headaches, hypertension, gastritis, and murderous impulses. So I figured instead I’d just write about them here. That should help guarantee that they never hire me. (Whew!)
First up, a startup company advertising for a Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP developer. Hey, that’s right up my alley! But… Uh… I can only imagine that they’re actually serious. Frankly, this reads like a joke to me. (I added the yellow highlighting below, so that you’ll see what I mean.) Continue reading “So THIS Is Why I Can’t Find Work”

I promised something lighthearted and fun for Monday, and I know I’m a little late with this post. But I hope you’ll forgive me, and I’ll try to get future Monday posts up earlier in the day.
Lately, as you may have noticed, I’ve been rediscovering blogging. That is, I’ve been writing more blog posts, more regularly. And not just posting more here on this blog, but rather on various sites in the J. Timothy King Website Network. And not just posting more articles, but also reading more blogs. And not just posting and reading, but posting and reading for the fun of it.
Over the weeks and months and years, I’ve gotten out of touch with the blogs and other sties in my RSS feeds, not even skimming them for interesting posts. But of late, I’ve started to visit certain feeds more regularly, and I’ve developed a process by which I can discover more interesting blogs, to skim them, and to categorize them by priority, depending on how interesting they are to me and how close their authors are to me personally. And it’s actually provided some enjoyment for me. (I just have to remember to let blogging stay fun and not to become work, or else I’ll get stressed out by it, and that will be the end of that.)
So I thought today, I’d post some of the interesting recent posts from some new blogs I’ve discovered. All of these blogs have already made it into my “preferred blogs” category, so I’ve already found some affinity with each of the authors of these blogs.
Enjoy!
